It's also an example of something else new that Mario Party 2 added to the mix over the first MP - costumes. That last one's an example of a Duel mini-game, another category of contest that lets two players go head-to-head against one another. Some of MP2's highlights, though, include "Grab Bag," where everyone's got a Santa-like sack over their shoulders and they're all running around trying to steal mushrooms out of the others while protecting their own "Slot Car Derby," the notoriously difficult-to-control Mario version of those old slot car racing sets you probably played with as a kid and "Quick Draw Corks," a one-on-one gunslinging showdown between two players. Each of the mini-games is goofy fun, and there are way too many to go through them all. These can be 2-on-2 challenges where you team up with a partner against another duo, 3-on-1 games where one player takes on all the rest, or free-for-alls where it's every man, woman and green-skinned dinosaur for themselves. Those Coins are primarily won in mini-games, and one mini-game is automatically played at the end of every round. The goal is to ultimately earn more Stars than your opponents, either by winning them, being awarded with them as bonuses for how you play or by simply purchasing them with the Coins you earn throughout the course of the game. You and up to three other players each choose a character, then take turns rolling a virtual die to determine how many spaces you'll move around the game board.

The main idea of the Mario Party series is that the Mushroom Kingdom gang of Mario, Luigi and all of their friends are participating in a giant, interactive board game. Mario Party 2, though, eliminated that category of mini-gaming and improved on the overall formula all-around too - so MP1, which will probably now never be seen again and go down in history as a collector's item in cartridge form, won't be much missed from the gameplay point of view.Įveryone's+been+enlisted+as+sheriff's+deputies+in+the+Western+Land. It included mini-games that involved spinning the N64 controller's central joystick in furious circles around and around and around, and lots of players ended up with lots of broken game pads and injured hands after getting a bit too competitive. Nintendo's wisely skipped over re-releasing the first Mario Party in VC form, since that game caused a bit of a PR disaster for the company just over a decade ago. It took over four years for the famous four-player Party series to make this encore appearance via the Wii's Virtual Console, but now that it's here you may want to seriously consider adding it to your end-of-year agenda.
